Update on City’s drop-off facilities during Level 2

10 September 2020

The City of Cape Town encourages residents to drop off waste items such as clean recyclables and garden refuse, at our open drop off-facilities. Revised operating times and services offered at the various facilities are detailed below or on the City’s website. Landscaping contractors/garden service companies should please note updates on the availability of a chipping service.

The City of Cape Town thanks residents who use our drop-off facilities, a number of which were re-opened at the start of Alert Level 3, and for adhering to the COVID-19 protocols. As of 1 September 2020, and in line with the further eased restrictions of Alert Level 2, more facilities are now open.

Greens chipping services:

The new greens chipping contract has been finalised and it is anticipated that the contractors will be on site by the end of this week.

In the interim, the garden refuse at the drop-off facilities will be contained in skips and no chipping will be taking place until the new contractors are on site. We therefore request that all residents and businesses reduce the generation of green waste during this period, reduce the size of the branches before disposal or find alternative users for the material to assist with space constraints at City facilities.

Loaders are on site to compress the stock-piled greens in order to make space for the incoming volumes.

Wynberg drop-off facility closed to landscaping/gardening companies:

Due to the limited space available, disposal of clean garden waste at this facility is currently closed for landscaping/gardening companies. Only residents are currently permitted to bring garden refuse (NB -excluding tree trunks and branches), to the Wynberg drop-off facility,

Limited space is due to the current upgrade of the garden refuse section. The upgrade will improve operations on site and increase capacity. Construction is scheduled for completion in 12 months’ time. We ask that residents please bear with us while this process is under way.

Garden services and businesses are requested to make use of the alternative drop-off facilities in the interim:

  • Spine Road, Mitchells Plain
  • Bellville Landfill, off Sacks Circle,
  • Swartklip Transfer Station, Swartklip Road
  • Coastal Park Landfill, Baden Powell Drive
  • Vissershok Landfill, N7
  • Athlone refuse transfer station drop-off

Please note that there will be no cost for landscaping/gardening companies dropping off garden waste at the transfer stations and landfill facilities, provided that the loads are within the 1,5 ton carrying capacity restriction. These loads must not include waste materials (such as bricks, sand, animal origin), other than garden greens. If loads exceed the 1,5 ton capacity, or are contaminated by rubble/general litter, users will be required to purchase disposal coupons at our cash offices before being allowed to use the landfill.

All other drop-off activities at Wynberg drop-off are operating as normal.

The City has taken a decision to limit the number of drop-offs reopened in order to have backup capacity in the event of a facility needing to be temporarily closed for decontamination. They are also being used as satellite depots for refuse collection vehicles to minimise contact among teams who would normally report to a central depot.

To reduce the spread of the virus, we will apply a strict ‘no mask, no entry rule’ at all City facilities. All visitors to our disposal facilities will be subjected to screening.
